Since the Iffers festival, I had a few weeks off due to "her indoors" working nights on the weekend. But it was soon back to action with a couple of opens on Manor Farm and then the Welsh national to compete in.
The Welsh national was held on White Springs this year which is a beautiful fishery just out side of Swansea. My Nomads team was myself, Jon Calli, Ellis Driscoll, Jimmy Tobin and Andy Washington with myself on the match lake.
I drew A8 which was permanent peg 12 in the top right hand corner, to my right I had Tony Summers for company who had the benefit of a nice looking corner to fish too.
I started off on the method as had a small island straight in front and a big bay of lillies to my right and it screamed out for fish to live there. After an hour on this though I only had 2 carp and 2 skimmers so a change was needed as didn't think that they were over there.
Next up was the paste as I'd noticed Tony have a few small F1's on the paste, but again it didn't bear any fruit.
I had been priming up a chopped worm and caster line at 12m and put a few pot fulls in through out the first couple of hours. I went out on this line with a small section of worm on the hook and the results were instant. I started catching F1's and some skimmers straight away plus a bonus slab of about 4lb.
There was obviously a few fish coming into the mix of chopped worm, caster and ABC's liquid detonater which is a brilliant additive when fishing the worm. So I fished the match out on this line trickling the bait in through the pot . I did have a few put ins down the edge but there was no carp there and ended up weighed in 37lb 1oz to be pipped by Tony next door by just 10oz. The guy to my left weighed in 5lb and there was quite a lot of weights under 10lb. I ended up 7th in my 19 peg section which I was satisfied with as it was a difficult section and there were a lot of far better pegs in than the one I was sat on.
Just goes to show the wonder of the worms and Detonater!
Check out my bait review of the Detonater HERE
We had a bit of bad luck as a team though with one lad getting disqualified for being on the wrong peg so unfortunately that put us down and off the pace.
It was a great day though and well done to the Cwmbran Nobblers team for winning it and Bob Giles for taking the title again!
