A NEW event is being set up for canal match fans, thanks to the Angling Trust & Canal & River Trust, with plans to emulate Riverfest. Being a canal angler of old myself I really welcome this news and look forward to hearing more about the plans to make this event bigger in 2015. Really sadly though this years match falls on the last round of our summer leage I got two fish o mania tickets this year, Tunnel Barn and Woodlands View. I was looking forward to this one as have spent a bit of time at Tunnel over the past few months and have to know it a little bit. On this qualifier there was 150 pegs in so it was going to be a bit cosy on a few areas, with a overnight frost and blue sky day who knows what was going it happen. I was hoping for a draw on Jennys or Club, but pulled out Canal 13 which was an end peg so not all bad. The only trouble with this area is that its like the M42 at rush hour straight after the draw as is on the road side and with a lot of cars going past my margin lines I didn't know whether that would affect proceedings or not. I had three lines to target, one tight over at 12m to the island, one down the track and the margins. My kick off line was long tight across on pellet and caster. This resulted in a few quick fish, mostly F1s around the 1lb mark. Despite regular feeding they didn't seem to be there in numbers though and it was a bit hit and miss on this line. I plugged at it for a few hours though as a look on the track line didn't result in any bites! Steve Cooke next to me was catching well on the long line but interestingly he had a flat bank opposite where as I had overhangs and brambles meaning I couldn't go tight over. The bites were very intermittent so about half way through the match decided to have a look on the margin line. I had fed some Bait Tech Ntice Meaty Mix down there and went in with 6mm punched Polony meat over the top (bait courtesy of swapping some crisps with Mr Neal!!). First chuck I had a proper carp of about 6lb closely followed by 3 more slightly smaller ones. Then nothing for about 15mins, the vision I had about them cueing up to be caught down there had faded. I did catch a few more Carp and Barbel as the match went on but that initial flurry of fish wasn't repeated sadly and the clock was ticking on. Torwards the end of the match I did have a look on twitter on my phone to see what Fordy was reporting and there was plenty of tons about so this time there was no cigar. Jamie Hughes led the scales for a fair while with 165lb before Ashley Price overtook him to win the match with 170lb. I tipped back around 60lb, Steve Cooke to my left won the section with 80lb but even that was a long way off on the day. My next and final Fish o mania ticket is on Woodlands View on June 11th so will look forward to that one. Results: Ashley Price 170lb 9oz (Jennys 18) Jamie Hughes 165lb 11oz (House 9) Frank Donachie 164lb 8oz (Jennys 19) Gary Thorpe 123lb 14oz (House 14) The photo's used are from Andy Fords Twitter updates, so as a thank you here is a link to his blog where you can also see video footage of this match from Sky Sports Tight Lines. http://stourfisher.wordpress.com/2014/05/ |
