I was in a dilemma on where to go this morning as I was driving up the M50 towards Tewksbury. On one hand I had prepared and was planning to go to Manor Farm and other the other I really wanted to give Hillview a bash as its been fishing so well and recently re stocked.
As I was also planning to fish next Thursday, Manor Farm won the deliberation and the car cruised on past Jct 1 where I would have got off the M50 if it was Hillview.
So Manor farm it was, and although I hadn’t fished it for a while I always enjoy the welcome there from Dave and Arthur and the fishing is very good so was looking forward to the day.
It was a bitterly cold morning with snow showers expected and the temperatures not expected to rise much above 0c but the F1s here are hardy fish and the weights are still good throughout the winter.
They used Boundary, Ash and Windmill lakes for the open Sunday and I drew peg 19 on Boundary which was at the top end of the lake next to the roped off area. I had 3 lines of attack planned, start off on the bomb on bread / pellet then a pole line at 13m on pellet and another 5m line on maggot.
When the siren went to start the match most people chucked the lead or feeder out and waited...and waited! It was a slow start and the signs were not good.
A few people were having odd silver fish but no Carp, my first bite was a skimmer on the lead that I caught when I tried maggot.
It was freezing cold and when I tried the pole line my hands were stinging from the cold wind it was that bad. As the match wore on Diddy on peg 11 was getting a few Carp on the lead and the lad next door had had a few as well but not many were catching.
At last a few hours in the tip went round properly on the sponge feeder and I had my first Carp, a Common of around 6lb. Sadly no more followed, but I did have about 15 skimmers which kept me occupied but the Carp were not there.
It was the same for many of the people on Boundary too and quite a few gave in to the cold and packed up and went home. I must admit I was quite glad when the end of the match was called and I got back in the car to warm up!!!
Diddy won the lake with 81lb with a few proper lumps in his net and Chris Cameron won the match off Ash lake. The full results were:
1ST CHRIS CAMERON 93-0-0
Middy Peg 18 Ash
2ND SEAN LITTLE 87-6-0
Map Marukyu Peg 9 Windmill
3RD IAN DIDCOTE 81-4-0
Garbolino Bait Tec Peg 11 Boundary
4TH NEIL McKINNON 54-0-0
Preston Innovations Peg 29 Windmill
I’ll still go back Thursday however for another go!
