It was back to team matches this week and myself and Larry Salter travelled up to the Gloucester Canal with our Sensas Cardiff Nomads team for the second round of the South West Super League.
The team was Chris Wilkins, Cellan Wilkins, Larry Salter, Shaun Wilson, Lee Pesticcio, Alan Mckenzie, Ian Didcote and myself.
We were in 2nd position after a good first round performance so another result was needed today to stay in the right area of the league.
Chris made the draw and it put me on peg 33 which was just down stream from Rea Bridge.
It was an end peg although there were 2 pegs further up the other side of the bridge. The peg itself was a bit awkward as I had a very steep bank behind me making shipping the pole back impossible so I had to position the rollers to my right and ship side wards.
I had 3 line of attack, a ground bait feeder line tight over to the far bank fishing dead maggot and caster, a long pole line and a inside line for eels. On the all in I cupped in 6 balls of groundbait on the 13m Line that was 70% leam and 30% Black Lake and fishmeal with a few particles of caster and dead reds.
While that was settling I started on the groundbait feeder tight over to the far bank. My groundbait mix for this was a 50/50 mix of supercup and Bremes to give a sweet fishmeal mix. Both my pole and feeder groundbaits were riddled as fine as possible.
After a few chucks and small taps I finally had a solid pull on the tip and a nice 4oz skimmer was in the net. This was a great start as I hadn't seen anyone else catch a fish at that point!
Shortly after it went round again but this time it was a small eel and not the skimmer that I was hoping for.
I didn't have any further bites on the two far bank lines so cupped in another ball of groundbait on the 13m pole line and had a drop with that on a single dead maggot.
The wind was absolutely horrendous and it made life really difficult seeing bites on the pole and tip but even more so trying to control the pole in such conditions. I am amazed that the pole made it back home in one
The pole line produced 4 small skimmers, a roach and a perch but there was no real fish there in any numbers so it was time to give the eel line a bash.
I'd been loose feeding caster and dead maggot on the eel line at 5m throughout the day, and it proved crucial too as 2nd chuck I had a good eel of around 12oz which bumped my weight up a bit.
The section had fished awful however with a lot of people weighing ounces, my net went 1lb 13oz and was good enough for 6 points out of my 8 peg section. The top two weights in the section came from the pegs above the bridge which was like fishing in a different world as they weighted 19lb and 12lb. But i'd had a decent result in a very poor area. so was satisfied with that
There was mixed results for the other lads with a few finding the going really tough which dropped us down a bit.
The next match is a practise open on the Huntspill in two weeks time so will report back then and let you know how we get on.
